September/October 2019

Apologies for not printing the September newsletter, we’ve been without a printer so this is September and October in one.

End of Summer Party
We had our end of summer party on Friday 13 September, it was a great success and we raised over £700 in profit. We’d like to say a big thank you to all of you that came and to our volunteers Lynda, her sister Lesley, Gavin, Gary and all the staff that worked so hard to make it happen.

This is your life: Barry Hackett
Barry was born in Leicester on 15th of May 1956. He lived with his Mother {Betty} and Father {Vernon}, two older Sisters {Janette and Yvonne} and various Cocker Spaniels in the village of Aylestone where the door was always open. Despite having a very busy job with the Gas Board Barry’s father was a keen gardener and growing his own vegetables, fruit and flowers. Barry’s family had access to a small farm through his grandparents, the farm had pigs, chickens and  fresh eggs!

Barry’s other Grandparents lived in Weymouth and despite not being included or evident in his daily life he spent many happy Summer holidays there. Barry’s father never met his Father-in-law, and there were a whole host of Uncles, Aunts and Cousins that he rarely saw.

Barry attended a local school until he passed the 11+ and went to Wyggeston Boys Grammar School, later moving to further education at a local College where he obtained a National Diploma in Catering followed by a National Diploma in Catering Management in Manchester. Barry’s career started as Catering Management Trainee at Paxmans Diesels in Colchester, then a Royal Ordinance Factory in Alsager near Crewe, several jobs in various isolated locations around the Country followed before arriving in London to work in some of the most prestigious buildings for the Civil Service. Finally Barry was able to set up home with Mike in Barkingside he decided to change profession becoming a Civil Servant working as Personnel and Pay Clerk in HMP Wandsworth for 6yrs before transferring to Croydon where he remained for the rest of his working life, finally taking early retirement in 2008. Shortly after his neighbours suggested he might be interested in UNACC and the rest they say is History.

Bringing your own food to the Centre
We’re happy for you to bring in a cake or biscuits to celebrate your birthday or a special occasion but we ask that you do not bring sandwiches or pies. Our funding is reliant on us being the food suppliers and if inspectors came and saw members bringing their own food that could affect any future funding. Thanks for your understanding.

UNACC Film Club
Film club returns on Wednesday 16 October, showing Catch me if you Can with delicious lamb chops, 8rosemary potatoes, lunch served at 12pm.

Take Away Meals Boxes
Please can you return any take away boxes, it’s much better for the environment and it’s cost affective for us, many thanks.

This is your life: Sir Kenneth French
Ken was born in 1934, during registration there was a mix up with the names, they told the registrar they were French and that’s what he put down as their surname.

During his childhood Ken worked as a paper boy in the mornings before attending St Joseph’s college school, he also helped once a week with the Corona lorry and twice a week with the milkman.  Ken’s family were descended from gypsies, they bought and sold horses at long meadow on Gypsy Hill,

In adult years Ken enjoyed physical activity and ran two London Marathons and a half marathon in Brighton, he worked for the council as a stone mason, but envied his brother who was a marine so he decided to join himself. After signing up he was consigned to the Marine Commandos and deployed to Burma for clearing up jobs in the jungle – it was hot!  On his return along with five others Ken was chosen for special duties, two out of six were picked and had to report to M16 headquarters at Embankment, one of the two was Ken, he had been chosen for the SAS. His first job in the SAS was chauffeuring the Royals although he never had the pleasure of driving the Queen, Ken soon realised the SAS wasn’t for him, he left to join the buses.

This is your life: Sheila Graham
Sheila was born in 1936 in Holloway London, here are some of her fond memories as a child, contracting pneumonia in infant school during an air raid and being sent to sit in a deck chair until 4pm when school finished. Sheila was so ill the doctor advised against going to hospital as the cost would be too much, luckily she recovered at home with her family. During the birth of her younger sister in 1944 Sheila and her eldest sister were sent to a Canadian Children’s home in Crouch End north London, it was the best Christmas she’d every spent, she was dressed in a little white blouse and kilt, nuts, fruits and sweets were hidden around the property for the children to find, foods which she had never eaten before and she felt it was so special.

Sheila started her working life as a machinist making beds at Myers, later moving to the fire brigade as an administrator working on fire safety, staying 19 years. Sheila retired at 65 and joined UNACC in 2001 as a volunteer where she met the love of her life Bill Hardy.

Vintage ‘Notes from the lake June 2009’
We now have a lot of goslings, ducklings and baby coots and moorhens. Unfortunately we also have hungry crows. These crows swoop over the baby birds and carry them away in their feet to nests in the wood behind the lake.

A ‘Bat hunt’ was held one evening. This is very interesting when hundreds of small bats (Pippistrels) fly over the water picking up insects. It looks like a cloud of big moths. There was a ‘spring bird call’ one morning at 5.30 hours!! This is to hear the ‘dawn chorus’.
Croydon Sailing club uses the lake on Sunday mornings. On Saturday mornings children are taught how to sail small boats and taught life-saving drills (all wear life jackets).
The large tree outside the club was cut down owing to a disease. I was told it was over 100 years old!
The coot with a broken leg is still there also a male tufted duck with an injured leg. Both refused to be rescued.
There are cricket and bowls matches at the weekend. These games have been played here for over 100 years
