UNACC Easter Dates
The Centre will be shut on Friday 25th March and Monday 28th March, we will return on Tuesday 29th March.

UNACC Poetry Competition
Mark has come up with a fantastic idea to compose a poem about why UNACC is important in our UNACC Poetry Competition. So pens at the ready, it can be a sonnet, limerick, narrative, rhyming whatever you fancy, just give it a go and release your inner Keats! The winning entry will be picked on Friday 18th March at the Easter sing-a-long, with a lovely big box of chocolates as the star prize.

We will be having an Easter banquet and sing-a-long on Friday 18th March in the main hall, tickets are on sale now, and are £16 which includes a 3 course meal (roast lamb mmm!) and one glass of wine. There will be an experienced pianist playing some great songs and we hope you will all be singing along! Please come and get your tickets from the office – all money raised goes back into the running of the club so please support us as much as you can!

We will be holding a UNACC Family fun day on Friday 8th April, there will be stalls, entertainment for children including, bouncy castle, face painting and craft and for adults. We would like to put on a photographic exhibition with you our members as the theme, we ask that you bring in pictures of yourselves growing up and in your hay day, we will take copies and return the originals. We also ask if you could please donate a bottle, chocolates, Easter eggs or new cuddly toys for our tombola. All money raised will go back into the running of the club so please support our event as much as you can by asking friends and family to come along.

Short Mat Bowls
We are keen to increase numbers playing Short Mat Bowls on a Friday morning so please support us and give it a try, you might just like it!

The silver screen will return to UNACC this month on Wednesday 23rd March. Film title to be revealed.  Tickets will be £2 including an ice cream – come and get your tickets from the office!

Croydon Hearing
Unfortunately due to cuts Croydon hearing is reducing it’s open surgeries and UNACC is one of the casualties, please see their statement: ‘After careful consideration we have unfortunately decided to reduce our open surgeries from 14 down to 9 and I’m afraid your centre is one that we feel we can no longer staff next year.’

UNACC Committee meeting – Monday 22nd February at 10.30am

UNACC Silver Screen
The silver screen will return to UNACC this month on Wednesday 24th February. It will be a love story featuring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Fred Astaire and will be shown at 12.30pm (lunch will be at 11.45ish that day). Tickets will be £2 including an ice cream – come and get your tickets from the office!

Volunteers Meeting – Could all volunteers please attend a short meeting on Friday 26th February at 10.30am? This is to formalize rotas so we know which volunteers come in on which days, go over roles and what needs to be done and complete any outstanding DBS checks. Thank you.

UNACC Pop Up Shop
The UNACC pop up shop is going online! We will be selling the current stock online and unfortunately cannot take any more donations for the moment due to lack of storage space. Thank you for all your support.

Happy New Year
A warm welcome back to you all, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas & New Year. Thank you to all of you for your help and support throughout the year. As you know, all money and time donated goes towards making sure UNACC continues to provide a great service for you, and helps the running of the club, so thank you all!

UNACC Christmas Party
The Christmas Party held on Friday 18th December 2015 was a great success, fun, laughter, great food, drink and Elsa came from the kitchen to put on a show and what a show, did anyone recognize her? Once again thank you for all your kind donations towards the raffle we raised £239.50

UNACC Christmas Times
The Centre will be closed from Monday 21st December, reopening on Monday 4th January, we wish you all a very happy Christmas.

UNACC Christmas Party!
The Christmas Party will be held on Friday 18th December 2015. If you have reserved your place please ensure you come to the office and pay by Friday 11th December. This year’s menu is, starter: choice of winter broth or prawn cocktail, main: roast turkey or nut roast with veg and roast potatoes, dessert: Xmas pudding or Trifle. The price is a very reasonable £17 for a 3 course meal, wine, dancing and entertainment, dinner will be served in the pavilion hall, come to the UNACC main room and wait to be taken through by the volunteers. Please ensure you bring the ticket on the day as proof of purchase and come to the main room.

Donations for Christmas Raffle
We would be very grateful for donations towards the Christmas raffle of nice bottles of wine, chocolates and good quality hamper type ingredients. Thanks in advance.

Good Times at the Dulwich Picture Gallery
Join the festivities and celebrate 10 years of tours, teas and art for older people on Wednesday 16th December 2015, 2-4pm. If you would like to attend RSVP Jessie on 0208299 8753

UNACC Silver Screen
The Classic 1946 Film ‘It’s a wonderful life’ directed by Frank Capra will be shown in the green room on Wednesday 2nd December at 12.30pm, a lovely film related menu created by our fabulous chef Mark will be served at the earlier time of 11.45 in the main room, all lunch orders must be in by 10.15am that day. Entry is £2.50 entry includes a glass of mulled wine or tea, coffee with a mince pie. Please let the office know you will be attending.

UNACC Pop Up Shop Opening Times
To maximize footfall we are considering changing the times of the pop up shop to run at the same times cafe. In the meantime in order to keep the social aspect of lunch we will organize the table to face each other in the main room until a new day is decided upon.

Welcome to the Woodside Bereavement Centre
A new addition to the offices upstairs at the Waterside Centre is the Woodside Bereavement Centre, they are currently looking to recruit volunteers. If you have some spare time and are interested call 0203 256 2009 or email wbs@thelisteningear.org.uk

Christmas Party

Thanks to all of you that supported the opening of the UNACC Friday Pop-Up-Shop and very special thanks to Jean Tennant  for coming to help set up on Thursday & Sophia for helping set up and doing such a fabulous job of running the shop, the sales reached £72.50 which is great. With this venture we aim to raise money for and awareness of UNACC. We are in need of boys & men’s good quality clothes and shoes, all donations greatly received.

On 20th November we have some people from the Alzheimer’s society coming in to talk to members and see what activities and facilities are available for older people in the area.

Lakeside Nursing Home
We had 27 members of the Lakeside nursing home join us for lunch on Wednesday 9th September, they had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the meal, special thanks to Mark and his team for doing a sterling job catering for the additional numbers. We look forward to them visiting us again.

Sue Porter
Thanks to those who attended Sue Porter’s memorial service which was held on Friday 18th September. Gerald and Mark paid touching spoken tributes to Sue, and Mark catered a fantastic feast for all who attended. Sue was a valued member of UNACC, and her life was celebrated by her friends at the service on 18th September.

The Silver Screen is coming to UNACC
As part of the South Norwood and Thornton Heath Free Film Festival we will be showing the 1949 classic Passport to Pimlico directed by Henry Cornelius
Screening Wednesday 14th October at 12.45pm, maximum of 50 people, please tell the office if you wish to attend, the screening is free – donations welcome.

Croydon Hearing Resource Centre
Will be visiting UNACC on Monday 26th October, 10.30-12.30.

Donations for the UNACC Pop Up Shop
To help with fundraising efforts and inspired by Sophia’s generous donation of shoes and boots we’ve decided to launch a UNACC Pop Up Shop. We’re asking for donations of new and nearly new clothing, shoes and handbags, all will be gratefully received.

Charities helping charities
UNACC is currently supporting Save the Dogs, a charity helping dogs (and cats) in the UK and in Europe to escape the streets and public shelters and find foster homes with a view to being adopted by loving owners. The conditions in public shelters can be appalling so we are helping them to fundraise by buying spaces on raffle cards. £2 buys you a space on the raffle card and when it is full the silver bar is scratched off, the matching dog breed wins £10! All proceeds go directly to helping animals in need, and you could win £10 for yourself.

West Norwood Tea Dance Photography Exhibition
You are invited to attend an exhibition of Photographs celebrating the guests and volunteers at the West Norwood Tea Dance. The private view is at The Portico Gallery, Knights Hall, 23a Knights Hill, West Norwood, SE27 0HS on 9th October, from 3pm – 9pm, and then open daily till the 16th October.

Waterside Open Day 
The Waterside Open Day was a great success! We had a fantastic time at the Waterside Open Day on Friday 14th August, the weather was good to us and the event was held outside, thanks to everyone that came making it such a great day. Also a big thanks you for all the donations and to Mark for making some fabulous cakes along with a delicious BBQ making a grand total of £494.71.

Sue Porter
For all those of you who remember Sue Porter, a former member and volunteer at UNACC who sadly passed away, a memorial service will be held on Friday 18th September. The service will be held at Upper Norwood Methodist church, Westow Hill, at 6pm. Mark will be catering, and any donations towards the cost of the food will be gratefully received. There is a list on the noticeboard to sign your name if you wish to attend the service so we can get an idea of numbers.

Claire Renn
Sadly, Tuesday 1st September will be Claire’s last day. She is leaving to take up a post utilising her considerable computer skills, which she was always happy to share with us at UNACC.I know you will join me in thanking Claire for all her hard work, friendship, IT help and backing dancer skills! Our lovely volunteer Roberta will be helping out on a temporary basis while a replacement is recruited. Thank you Claire, we will miss you and hope you will come back and see us now and again for a cup of tea and one of Mark’s cakes!

Waterside Centre Open Day
There is an open day on Friday 14 August from 11am to 3pm in the Pavilion Hall and ground (weather permitting!). Admission is free and there will lots of fun activities to raise money and awareness of UNACC and all the other community groups that use the Waterside Centre. We will have a card stall, bric a brac, bottle stall, cake stall and shove ha’penny. Mark will also be doing a BBQ so please come for your lunch! All proceeds will go to UNACC and the Smile Train. The centre will be closed on the 14th and there will be no lunch (apart from BBQ) or bowls. 

Donations of bottles & bric a brac
We need donations of bottles – of wine, shampoo, champagne – and good quality, nearly new bric a brac for our stalls at the Open Day. Please make sure you donate them before the 14th August as we will not be able to take donations on the day. 

A happy place to be
Could everyone please make a special effort to ensure that all our members and volunteers of whatever race, religion or sexuality are made to feel welcome and comfortable at UNACC. UNACC is a warm and friendly place to be, and it’s important that it always stays that way. Joining a club is a big step for some people so we want to make sure everyone – staff, volunteers and members, knows they are valued.

Action on Elder Abuse
Action on Elder Abuse work to protect, and prevent the abuse of, vulnerable older adults. They are coming to talk you about their Volunteer Buddy project which brings older people together to support survivors of elder abuse (their clients) through their recovery journey. The program aims to combat elder neglect, reduce isolation, increase resident participation, and improve elder’s confidence. They will be at the centre to chat to you from 11.30am on 4th August.

Carers Week Afternoon Tea
We will be holding an afternoon tea event on Tuesday 9th June from 11am until 2pm. The wonderful Rose Bartlett from ‘To have and to hold vintage’ will be playing her vintage records, members will be displaying their artwork from our successful art class, and afternoon tea (including on the veranda) will be available instead of the normal hot lunch. This is in celebration and to reward hard working carers as part of Carers Week. If anyone has a small garden table and chairs we could borrow for the occasion please let the office know.

Bingo Monday
Don’t forget that we have bingo every Monday after lunch. It’s a lot of fun with some great prizes! Please come on down legs 11! No bingo on 8th June.

Big Lunch
This is an annual event to get friends and neighbours together. To join in the fun we are having a lunch on Friday 5th June where all over 50s are welcome including non-members. Please invite your friends. You never know they may like it so much they join! 

Sailing Club Open Day
The Sailing Club open day on Sunday 10th May was a success. We will have a stall selling BBQ burgers, hot dogs and jerk chicken as well as drinks. We made over £150 for the UNACC.
